New Brunswick’s Big Five
Potatoes
So Proud of our Humble Spuds
Wholesome, filling, flavourful, and oh-so-versatile, New Brunswick potatoes are valued internationally for their exceptional flavour and quality. Home to the world’s leading potato processor, we export our table potatoes and processed products to over 35 countries.
Wild Blueberries
Nature’s Nutritional Powerhouse
This delicious superfruit has grown in New Brunswick for millennia. More nutrient-dense than cultivated varieties, our wild blueberries retain their shape, colour, texture, and flavour even when frozen, processed or baked. As one of the largest growers in Canada, the world’s No. 1 wild blueberry producer, we’ve got a global supply year-round.
Maple Syrup
Wild Sweetness From the Woods
Nothing else tastes like maple. Brimming with trace minerals, this traditional food dates back centuries. Every spring, our producers head to the forest to sustainably harvest sap they transform into millions of litres of Grade A maple syrup, making New Brunswick one of the world’s top three producers.
Cranberries
Tart Never Tasted So Good
These ruby-red gems from the wild are native to New Brunswick, the third-largest producing province in a nation that’s the world’s second-largest cranberry producer. Bursting with antioxidants, phytonutrients and vitamins, this vibrant superfruit is available frozen, fresh, dried or in juices, concentrates and sauces.
Apples Malus
Sweet, Crisp, Pure to the Core
Short summers and long winters make the best apples. As one of five apple-producing provinces in Canada, our harsh climate results in deliciously juicy and healthful fruit that stays fresh longer. Along with ideal conditions for Honeycrisp, our orchards grow a range of varieties enjoyed worldwide, fresh, in juices and ciders, and for baking.
Innovation: It’s In Our Nature
In New Brunswick, we are never far from the forest or field. Farming, foraging and food production have deep roots in our province, where making a living from the land has been a way of life for generations. Centuries of growing and processing experience combined with cutting-edge technology and science have produced many breakthroughs:
- Collaborations between wild blueberry growers and researchers have resulted in new technologies, equipment, and techniques to streamline harvest and increase yields.
- Over 95% of New Brunswick wild blueberries are sold to processors who clean, sort and grade the berries for freezing. Individual Quick Freezing (IQF) preserves their nutritional value and great taste and makes them easy to pour from the container.
- The frozen french fry! New Brunswick is home to the world’s largest producer of frozen potato products and to Florenceville-Bristol, a small farming community that’s the world’s French fry capital.
- Our potato industry is supported by the work of leading agricultural scientists from the federal and provincial governments and industry associations.
- The Potato Research Centre in Fredericton, New Brunswick, is home to the national potato breeding program. The centre is part of a nationwide network of researchers, consultants and crop advisors with international expertise in potato pathology, physiology, entomology and processing.
- Our elite potato seed production facilities are constantly developing improved methods of disease-free propagation and multiplication.
- When Francis Peabody Sharp, a 19th-century New Brunswick grower, mastered the tricky technique of crossbreeding apple trees, he pioneered the method to create new varieties, becoming Canada’s first fruit tree breeder. Many Sharp varieties are still grown here, including Crimson Beauty, an all-red dessert apple he bred in 1854.
- Our apple industry has invested in state-of-the-art controlled storage technology for increased quality and long-term storage.
Wild by Nature
New Brunswick is a small, sparsely populated province on Canada’s east coast. Our terroir is pristine and rugged, spanning rolling farmland with some of the most fertile soil in North America; vast forests, fields and moors; and abundant lakes and rivers. All this, combined with our extreme climate of cold, snowy winters and short, warm summers, results in crops of
exceptional flavour and quality.
Our unique micro-climates produce the unique tastes and appealing appearances of our crops. For instance, cool nights bring out the sugars that make our Honeycrisps deliciously sweet and beautifully red. And our harsh winters, temperate summers and fertile soils result in top-quality potatoes.
Safety You Can Trust. Quality You Can Taste.
New Brunswick’s agrifoods come with a side order of peace of mind. Our close-knit culture values trust and connection to our neighbours, communities, and environment, fostering a strong sense of stewardship. We follow the most rigorous regulations for food safety and environmental, financial, and social sustainability.
- Our food businesses comply with all federal and provincial food safety laws and local municipal legislation.
- Our potato growers use only seed certified by a government-backed national program that’s among the most comprehensive and stringent in the world.
- Our dedicated potato scientists are part of a network of researchers working in state-of-the-art research facilities across Canada to strengthen our industry’s leadership position.
- Public and private breeding programs are developing new crop varieties with improved disease resistance and reduced input requirements.
- Generations of growers use the latest technologies and varieties to produce top-quality, high-yielding crops.
An Abundance of Choice
Whether you’re looking for a high-volume, year-round supply of frozen products, top-quality fresh fruits and vegetables, or a unique ingredient for your menu, there’s a New Brunswick producer for you.
