New Brunswick’s Big Ten
Innovation: It’s In Our Nature
In New Brunswick, the ocean is our backyard, and we are never far from the forest or field. Farming, fishing, and food production have deep roots in our province, where making a living from nature’s bounty has been a way of life for generations. Centuries of growing and processing experience combined with cutting-edge technology and science have given our rural, coastal and Indigenous communities exceptional expertise and produced world-first innovations.
- A pioneer in the shellfish industry, New Brunswick oyster cultivators transformed traditional growing techniques into globally adopted technologies and practices.
- New Brunswick is home to the world’s largest producer of frozen potato products and to Florenceville-Bristol, a small farming community that’s the world’s French fry capital.
- New Brunswick paved the way for high-pressure processing (HPP) in the lobster industry. This no-heat process preserves its flavour, texture and nutrition. State-of-the-art handling and packing ensure a year-round supply with a long shelf life.
- The birthplace of North America’s salmon aquaculture industry. Our specialists and research partners in government, the private sector and academia have a vast knowledge base that’s continually advancing the field.
Our Wild Roots are Showing
New Brunswick is a small, unspoiled province on Canada’s east coast with some of the most fertile soil in North America bordering an epic ocean.
We are home to the mighty Bay of Fundy, which refreshes our fishing grounds and farms with the world’s highest tides twice daily. Our extremely clean, cold and salty water is the ultimate merroir for superior seafood
Our terroir is pristine and rugged, spanning rolling farmland with vast forests, fields and moors; and abundant lakes and rivers. All this, combined with our extreme climate of cold, snowy winters and short, warm summers, results in crops of exceptional flavour and quality.
Safety You Can Trust. Quality You Can Taste.
New Brunswick food and beverages come with a side order of peace of mind. Our close-knit culture values trust and connection to our neighbours, communities, and environment, fostering a strong sense of stewardship. We follow the most rigorous regulations for food safety and environmental, financial, and social sustainability.
- Our food businesses comply with federal, provincial and global food safety laws and local municipal legislation.
- We have rigorously regulated fishing licenses and seasons.
- Generations of growers use the latest technologies and varieties to produce top-quality, high-yielding crops.
- We employ science-backed harvesting, aquatic animal health management strategies.
An Abundance of Choice
Whether you’re looking for a high-volume, year-round supply of frozen products, top-quality seafood or produce, or a unique ingredient for your menu, there’s a New Brunswick producer for you. Along with large-scale processors, we’re home to a range of smaller artisanal producers and special product offerings, including:
- Seafood, in all its forms: As the largest processor of frozen seafood in the world, we offer a plethora of value-added lobster, salmon, and crab products and formats, including shelled, smoked, tinned and more.
- Unique Crops: Haskap and sea buckthorn are two delicious and highly nutritious berries that thrive in New Brunswick. Along with frozen fruit, they are available in tasty sauces, juices and other products. We’re also the largest producer of dulse. This delicious, nutritious seaweed is still harvested by hand at low tide from small wooden boats, then sun-dried.
- Traditional Ingredients: New Brunswick has a long history of producing top-quality staples of the traditional Canadian pantry, including molasses, tea and spices. As home to the inventor of the chocolate bar, we have a sweet tooth, too.
- Contemporary Products: More recently, our processors have expanded our offerings to include international products such as pita bread, samosas and kombucha.
